Arch Thesis Winter 2024 and Ongoing Instructor: Zachary Mollica Inverting the Unwanted introduces an innovative timber structure design that involves cutting a log into quarters and rearranging it to create a square exterior. This method standardizes the geometry and dimensions of small-diameter trees, which are an underutilized waste-material stream, transforming them into posts and beams. As small-diameter trees are often felled en masse as part of a forestry practice called “thinning”, repurposing these materials has the potential to sequester the carbon otherwise released through decomposition.&nbsp; Click here for a full write up of the work. The typical use cases are for pulpwood for paper manufacturing. These cut trees are not worth much, and after transportation/labor costs, foresters barely break even. Most of the time, these cut trees are left to decompose, and all the carbon sequestered goes back into the atmosphere. prototypes, and are a means to scale the work while keeping fabrication efficient. Key computational processes utilizes were:Genetic Optimization (Galapagos)Photogrammetry Pseudo-random recursion Log of Best Fit Computational techniques such as genetic optimization via Galapagos can be utilized to speed up the search for cut planes that define a structurally stable column. In the video shown, the script takes a scanned log and is optimized to minimize the volume difference between the cut quadrants. This balances wood mass amongst the column quadrants to distribute the load equally. Fitness Criteria: Minimize difference in volume between quadrants Genome: Cutting plane angle and position While the optimization itself is still in its infancy, it produces rich possibilities for scaling up the production of the Puzzle Log. Furthermore, it helped explore the design space of the Puzzle Log, discovering new configurations previously unthought of. Log Generator Log Generator is a grasshopper script that generates pseudo-randomized logs that auto-cuts and positions the quarters and inverts them to form the final product. The randomization of log geometry and the cut planes ensures diversity in output generations somewhat reflective of the natural growth of trees. The randomization process includes multiple parameters that recursively produces a synthetic dataset of test logs. Two avenues of experimentation goals are: 1. Exploring design space that is contextually relevant to the project(Since the images are generated with existing images from a project, further generations may be similar enough that they could be feasible ideas that push the design space for that project. This functions as a more specific means of exploring design space as opposed to experimenting with a more general AI model.) 2. Recreating the representational style from the original dataset(Since the model is built on project specific drawings, an AI model can enable a workflow where no further edits are required after image generation to make these images presentation ready.) experiment #1 A close friend and colleague, Daniel Wong, was interested in the lifespan of buildings and their components for his thesis work, and in the process had drawn enough images that a clear visual style was established. Using these drawing sets we trained two LORA’s and generated new images. I’m guessing that this output is a result of some influence from the main AI model and not from the LORA, or from some of the generic word prompted included like “architecture, decay, rubble, rebuild” etc. more technical explanation: Ok so a huge misnomer is that people think of “AI” and “AI models” as a singular entity that takes some kind of input and gives some kind of output. AI models are more like a cake that has multiple layers, each layer processes the input image into other forms of information (vectors, words etc.) and at the end outputs another image. than I had anticipated, especially considering the consistency of the training data. More experiments need to be run altering the “concept strength” to higher values. While overall graphic style is consistent, I wasn’t able to get the image frame from the training data to appear, but this might be due to aspect ratio differences and/or a lack of white space in the input imagery. Also, I’m finding myself drawn to using colorful input imagery since the correlation between input/output comes through very clearly. Product photography tends to be of high quality and clear so it has been a good starting point for image generation. Winter 2022 Instructor: Chloe Town Contrary to popular belief, seed banks are not basic facilities in which seeds are simply placed into cold storage until the end of time. Seed banks are constantly running, cycling through their seed stock in order to maintain seed viability, and to ensure that their stored seeds are able to germinate. When seed stocks become invalid above a certain threshold, the remaining seeds are germinated and brought to maturity in order to harvest and process another batch of seeds for storage, ensuring the continued survival of that species. This project follows the process of seed storage at Kayanase in a linear manner, taking visitors through the process and allowing staff to go about their duties in an efficient way. intelligence critique Winter 2024 In partnership with: Cathryn Copper, Paul Howard Harrison A video exhibition that ran at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design for 5 weeks. The exhibition comprised of 23 student projects that use image generation AI to recreate an image of existing architectural works without using the name of the project or author.This exhibition showcased the success and failures of AI, and student ability to critique its abilities, its strengths, blind spots, misunderstandings, hallucinations and other inadequacies. A collaborative partnership between the course Computation and Design and the Eberhard Zeidler Library. This exhibition culminated in a AI guide, research paper and conference presentation for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). My main contributions to this project were putting together the AI guide and exhibition, while adding to the research paper. This project was made possible by my concurrent employment as a Research Assistant for the Library, while also being a Teaching Assistant for the course, Computation and Design, allowing me to organize and liase between both. One day I went out of curiousity and picked up a few sheets of Lokta paper, which is a paper made from the inner bark of the lokta bush (Daphne shrub). The fibers are cooked into pulp and spread on mesh frames to sun-dry. Lokta bushes regenerate after branches are cut, making for a sustainable means of paper production. Over time this has evolved into exploring paper more broadly - hanji paper, japanese paper, lokta paper, shoe wrapping paper and more to come. To date I’ve made 14 of these in various forms, and they live around the world with different friends and family. Instructors: Christine Ho Ping Kong and Peter Tan of Studio Junction A remake of Frank Gehry’s iconic Hat Trick Chair under the tutelage of Studio Junction. The making of this chair involved formwork making, steam bending, complicated glue-ups, finishing, and many other woodworking techniques. All formwork used in this project was freecycled MDF, with the only virgin material used being the wood for the chair itself. Located in the industrial-residential neighborhood of the Gowanus Lowlands, the program includes workshop interiors and a central alleyway that serve as a space for the community to breathe new life into these salvaged materials. Environmental impact, circular design, and adaptive reuse were cornerstones of this design. resource streams Leveraging the system of nearby demolition sites, transfer stations, and freight depots, RE - STORE functions as a collection point for these up-cyclable resource streams. The main structural members are composed of mass timber GLT beams and columns with steel connectors, while the flooring and walls are all composed of CLT panels. Through the inclusion of biogenic materials in the facade assembly, we were able to offset carbon costs. A range of analysis on building loads, material life cycles and passive heating/cooling strategies were conducted and implemented to lower the amount of embodied and operational carbon in the design. Both summer and winter heating/cooling strategies were considered. design The facade was a focus of the studio. Every year around the world, people temporarily repurpose on-street, boulevard or lot parking spaces into installations, activations and parks for art, play and activism. SVN’s parking day installation prioritized sustainability and lightweight construction. Utilizing jumbo kraft packing tubes as structural elements for tables, benches, and a planter. Ojo. The brief was to design a simple bench for TDSB summer school workshop students to fabricate, that would live in front of select storefronts in Little Jamaica.&nbsp;Designed to be easy to build and composed of multiple individual stools, the bench is meant to be as inclusive as possible. Instead of one class working on a singular bench, where not everyone gets to participate in the entirety of the build process, Split Bench supports equitable access to students by letting them work in smaller groups, before coming together as a class to assemble a bench. Store usage was also considered in the design, sidewalks in Little Jamaica are not exceptionally wide, and many stores required a bench that allowed for socialization. The design solution of allowing the bench to split apart as multiple stools created that much needed flexibility. A singular central beam ties the stools together for convenient transport. Unfortunately, TDSB did not host the summer courses, so the bench was instead built by yours truly. However, students got the opportunity to visit the faculty on a field trip, and were able to assemble miniature, laser-cut versions of the bench with our guidance.
